8:00 AM: Departure for Ninh Binh. You will cover 100 km to reach Hoa Lu, the Ancient Capital of Vietnam from 968 to 1009. The Citadel is surrounded by limestone peaks and rivers, forming a natural wall used for protection against the Chinese invaders, providing a breathtaking and astonishing setting. This fabulous site is rich in historical, cultural, religious, and geological wonders. Visit two temples dedicated to the Dinh and Le dynasties.
Then, head to Tam Coc, where you will discover the deep countryside of Northern Vietnam, with villages surrounded by rice fields and karst peaks. Enjoy lunch with a local family.
Transfer to the Tam Coc Wharf to explore this renowned site: the "Inland Ha Long Bay," known for being the filming location of several scenes from the movie 'Indochina.' Take a one-and-a-half-hour sampan ride on the Ngo Dong River winding through mountains and rice fields. A tranquil boat ride where you will savor the calmness and serenity. You will pass through three caves and admire a beautiful landscape featuring small hamlets, rice fields, cemeteries, and temples. You will also have the opportunity to observe fishermen in the rice fields.
Disembark the sampan at Ben Thanh for a short walk through the countryside. Visit the ancient Thai Vi Temple, built in the 13th century after the Tran victory against the Mongols, to welcome King Father Tran Thai Tong, who, after abdicating the throne to his son, wished to dedicate himself to Buddhism.
Next, you can take an optional bicycle tour through the Vietnamese countryside. Pedal towards Bich Dong Pagoda, taking the trail through the village of Dam Khe. A stop will allow you to take beautiful photos of rice fields, water buffaloes, and friendly locals. Pause near a cemetery to better understand Vietnamese customs and traditions regarding the deceased.
Visit Bich Dong - an ancient typical pagoda dating back to the 15th century to expand your knowledge of Buddhism in Vietnam. First, cross a stone bridge over a lake leading to Chua Ha. In summer, you can smell a pleasant fragrance from lotus flowers cultivated in this small lake. Then, climb over 100 steps to reach the splendid cave temples of Bich Dong: Trung and Thuong pagodas. From there, you will have a beautiful panoramic view of the countryside.
Return to Hanoi.
