7:00 AM: Departure by collective Dcar Limousine bus from Hanoi to Lao Cai

12:30 PM: Arrival in Sapa. Lunch.

1:30 PM: Hike towards Lao Chai San via Y Linh Ho. Stop along the way to chat with locals, exchange about their culture and way of life. During your hike, you will see many traces of slash-and-burn agriculture. Enjoy the beautiful view over the terraced rice fields surrounding the village of Y Linh Ho, stronghold of the Black H'mong.

At the end of the day, the hike is uphill to the village of Lao Chai San. Overnight homestay.

Breakfast at the homestay.

8:30 AM: Continue your trek through the rice valley of Muong Hoa where, depending on the season, you will witness either rice harvesting or transplanting. Take a walk to visit the village and enjoy the beautiful view of the Muong Hoa valley. From Lao Chai San village, follow a narrow trail for two hours to reach Lao Hang Chai village (at an altitude of 1146 meters). You will encounter friendly Hmong women and children living in houses nestled in the valley. Stop along the way to chat with the locals, exchange cultural insights, and learn about their way of life. You'll have the opportunity to see the various processes of hemp fiber production, weaving, or embroidery.

Lunch at the homestay.

Afternoon: Follow the buffalo trail along the mountain slopes, offering breathtaking landscapes, to the small Hmong village of Giang Ta Van (at 1029 meters altitude). Then, gradually descend to Ta Van village (at 989 meters altitude), where the Dzay and Hmong ethnic groups coexist. Enjoy the stunning view of the terraced rice fields and the Hoang Lien Son mountain range.

You will spend the night in a bungalow, with a beautiful view of the rice fields and the stream.

Optional: Your hosts will offer you a foot bath with medicinal plants to help you recover from your efforts of the day!

Wake up at dawn to admire the sunrise over the terraced rice fields. Breakfast at the homestay.

Depart early from Ta Van for a magnificent hike through a bamboo forest, allowing you to reach Giang Ta Chai – the Red Dao village seldom visited by tourists. You will have the chance to admire the beauty of a waterfall, a suspension bridge, and explore the lifestyle and customs of the local inhabitants. Visit the Red Dao village of Giang Ta Chai for authentic encounters with the Red Dao people. Continue your hike to Su Pan and its beautiful terraced rice fields. This journey will take you through a superb valley with stunning terraced rice fields. You will have the opportunity to meet ethnic groups such as the Black Hmong and Red Dao. Originally from China, they settled in Vietnam in the 11th century, establishing themselves at high altitudes, far from the modern world, which allows them to preserve their traditions, language, and above all, their ancestral way of life. You will experience authentic encounters and visit a family to better understand their life and culture.

Transfer back to Sapa.

Useful Information

  • This itinerary combines moderate and difficult hikes for experienced hikers. This trip can be organized throughout the year. The landscapes are beautiful from May to September when there is rice on the terraced fields and corn in the fields. However, it is hot and humid during these months, especially in July and August. The weather is pleasant in October, November, and the first week of December. January and February are cold and foggy. The weather improves in March and April. The best time to admire the terraced rice fields is from late June to August.
  • The terraced rice fields of Sapa, cultivated in May and harvested before September, are nevertheless less beautiful during the winter period, between November and April.
  • Safety equipment: bring hiking shoes, a flashlight, mosquito repellent, sunscreen from April to November, warm clothing during winter (mid-November to early March), towel, and toiletry kit. Personal luggage should not exceed 6 kg during the hike. The itinerary may be modified for the safety of clients in case of bad weather.
