Departure in the evening to catch the night train from Hanoi Railway Station. Departure in the evening to catch the night train from Hanoi Railway Station. The departure will be around 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM. You need to be at the station one hour before the train departure time and have dinner before boarding. Lao Cai station is the terminal, so you can sleep peacefully without worrying about going further than Lao Cai. Spend the night on board the train in a 4-berth cabin. Enjoy the beautiful view of the Red River from the train. Night train journey: 9:00 PM

Trek through the Muong Hoa Valley amidst terraced rice fields and the villages of Y Linh Ho - Lao Chai - Ta Van, meeting with Black Hmong and Dzay.

Arrive at Lao Cai Railway Station early in the morning around 6:00 AM. Your guide and driver will be waiting for you to accompany you to Sapa where you can freshen up and have breakfast at a local restaurant.

9:00 AM: Transfer by vehicle to Y Linh Ho in the Muong Hoa Valley, enjoying beautiful views surrounding the village of Y Linh Ho, the stronghold of the Black Hmong.

You will follow a trail that crosses the stream dividing the valley surrounded by terraced rice fields. As you descend, you will encounter friendly Hmong women and children living in houses nestled in the valley.

You will ascend along the Buffalo Path trail, less touristy and offering breathtaking landscapes. For those looking for an easier hike, opt for a leisurely stroll along the Muong Hoa River, from the Y Linh Ho valley (Black Hmong) to the Dzay village of Ta Van.

Lunch at a local restaurant before continuing your hike to the village of Lao Chai. Take a short break at a batik workshop to observe the techniques of Black Hmong batik art painting. You will meet a craftsman from the village to learn more about the beeswax technique used in decorating traditional indigo clothing of the Hmong. This special encounter is an excellent opportunity to learn a little about their daily life and culture. Then, visit a family that produces incense cones on the way to Ta Van.

You will spend the night in a bungalow, with a beautiful view of the rice fields and the stream.

Optional: Your hosts will offer you a foot bath with medicinal plants to help you recover from your day's efforts, a pure moment of well-being!

From Ta Van, you embark on a beautiful hike with passages through a bamboo forest leading you to Giang Ta Chai - the village of the Red Dao, less frequented by tourists. You will have the chance to contemplate the beauty of a waterfall, a suspension bridge, and discover the way of life and customs of the local inhabitants.

Visit the Red Dao village of Giang Ta Chai. Authentic encounters with the Red Dao. Continue your hike to a wilder area towards Seo Trung Ho and its beautiful terraced rice fields. This journey will take you through a stunning valley with beautiful terraced rice fields. You will have the opportunity to meet the ethnic groups of Black Hmong and Red Dao. Of Chinese origin, they settled in Vietnam in the 11th century, establishing themselves at high altitudes, far from the modern world, allowing them to preserve their traditions, language, and above all, their ancestral way of life. You can experience authentic encounters, visit a family to better understand their life and culture.

Transfer by car to Lao Cai. Visit a beautiful temple on the border with China and take a short tour of the Lao Cai market. Dinner at a restaurant before taking the night train Lao Cai - Hanoi: SP4, Departure at 9:30 PM. You will arrive in Hanoi at 5:25 AM the next morning.

Useful Information

  • Safety equipment: bring hiking shoes, a flashlight, mosquito repellent, sunscreen from April to November, warm clothing during winter (mid-November to early March), towel, and toiletry kit.

  • The best time to admire the terraced rice fields is from late June to August. However, the terraced rice fields in the high mountains of Sapa and Y Ty, cultivated in May and harvested before September, are less beautiful during the winter period, between November and April.

  • The train to Sapa is very traditional with a soft bed, but there are a lot of vibrations and sometimes it can be noisy and uncomfortable for some clients. Bring earplugs for a better sleep.

  • During the winter season (December to January), the weather is often cold and foggy early in the morning and late in the afternoon, and sometimes all day long on certain days.
