Overview

Bordering China, Ha Giang is the northernmost province of Vietnam. Renowned for its natural beauty, the Dong Van Karst Plateau, and the stunning terraced rice fields of Hoang Su Phi, it also owes its fame to the diversity of cultures, customs, and ways of life of the 26 ethnic groups residing there.

Until recently, the province was off-limits to tourists due to poor road conditions and a lack of suitable accommodations. It was only opened to tourism a few years ago. The provincial authority has made significant efforts to attract tourists to Ha Giang, investing a considerable amount of money in developing road networks to access most of the localities, which had been deserted by tourists.

Journey to Hoang Su Phi, hike (easy access) to the village of the Red Dzao ethnic group

On the way to the Hoang Su Phi region, the land of terraced rice fields and mysterious festivals. Stop in Tuyen Quang to admire beautiful tea hills. Lunch at a restaurant. Upon reaching the Tan Quang crossroads, you'll turn left, and the road will gain altitude, winding through an area where Dzao, Tay, and Nung coexist. The road opens up to a beautiful rice valley in the Thong Nguyen commune. You'll arrive at the Nam Hong Red Dzao village in the mid-afternoon. Take a stroll to explore the agricultural environment, their traditional habitat, customs, and the rice valleys of Nam Hong.

Immerse in the Culture of the Long Tunic Dzao Ethnic Group

Trek from Nam Hong through the villages of Giang, Khoa Ha, and Khoa Trung. Crossing valleys and passes, we enter this secluded region where mountainous ethnic groups (Dzao Ta Pan) cultivate Shan tea, harvest cardamom, and numerous medicinal plants mainly for the Chinese market. The locals have divided the territory based on altitudes: the H'Mong hold the higher lands, the Yao (Dzao) are on the mountain slopes between 500m and 1000m, and the Tay are in the valley bottoms with more fertile land. Strangers to each other, with different customs and languages, they are nonetheless neighbors. Lunch at a local house.

Afternoon: We pass through the Gate of Heaven to reach the Nam Ai Valley. You'll take time to appreciate the fabulous bucolic landscape. Depending on the season, you may witness agricultural activities such as harvesting, transplanting, and more. Dinner and overnight stay with the Long Tunic Dzao.

Immerse in the Culture of the Flower Hmong Ethnic Group. Farewell to our host's house.

Today, you'll continue the 5 to 6-hour hike. The route includes traversing terraced rice fields, bamboo forests, and magnolia groves, in an area where locals harvest cardamom and medicinal plants.

Afternoon: We ascend the hills through rice valleys and Shan tea plantations. This region is known for the quality of its tea, picked from century-old trees. You'll pass through Tay, Red Dzao, and Flower Hmong villages. For the night, you'll lodge with a Flower Hmong family - a different minority group from the previous night, offering you a chance to deeply feel the distinctions in the daily lives of these diverse ethnicities.
