Dien Bien Phu is mostly known for having been the place of the decisive battle against the French in 1954. Nowadays, it is a growing city with beautiful surroundings. The ruins of the French defensive installations were rebuilt and are now opened to visitors.

The Lai Chau province is located in the Northwestern part of Vietnam and shares borders with China, Laos and the provinces of Lao Cai, Son La and Dien Bien. Lai Chau is at around 210km of Dien Bien Phu, 200km of Sapa and 400km of Hanoi by way of the famous road N°32.

Mai Chau, in Hoa Binh province, is an isolated place at 140km from Hanoi. At an altitude of only 150m, Mai Chau is surrounded by a sea of rice fields shaping beautiful landscapes. This land is home to the White Thai ethnic group, living on stilt houses. Many hamlets are accessible by foot or by bicycle. Mai Chau is typical of the peaceful and simple life in rural Vietnam. It is a fantastic place where people can hike in a fresh and lush nature while staying at night in homestays.

This nature reserve was established in 2006 and is opened to tourists since 2010. Therefore, it’s a relatively new and attractive eco-touristic destination located southwest to Hanoi, between Cuc Phuong National Park and the Pu Luong Nature Reserve.

The Pu Luong Nature Reserve is in Thanh Hoa province, in the Ba Thuoc and Quan Hoa districts, not far from Mai Chau. It consists of two mountain ridges; only the ridges covered by forests are part of the reserve. The central valley is a large agricultural area where you can also find stilt houses dotting the land.

Son La

Son La

At approximately 200km from Hanoi, Son La province is a mountainous region of Northwestern Vietnam extending to the border with Laos. The average altitude is 600m. As the land is not very fertile, farming is not developed, but large meadows allow cattle and milk production. Many hills are covered by tea plants. 12 ethnic minorities currently live in Son La, with the Thai group being the most represented of the bunch.
